At least 35 people were killed and dozens injured in Israeli strikes on a tent camp in Rafah, southern Gaza, which had been designated a humanitarian safe zone for displaced Palestinians by Israel’s military, according to Gazan officials.
The makeshift camp was within Block 2371 in Rafah, designated a humanitarian zone by Israeli officials on Wednesday, according to Muhammad Abu Hani, a civil defense official in Gaza.
Israel’s military confirmed it carried out an airstrike in northwestern Rafah on Sunday night, based on "precise intelligence." The strike reportedly killed two senior Hamas officials, including Yassin Rabia, the commander of the group’s operations in the West Bank. The Washington Post could not independently verify this claim.
The Israel Defense Forces stated they are reviewing the incident following reports that "as a result of the strike and the fire that was ignited, several civilians in the area were harmed."
A video posted by local journalists showed charred bodies being pulled from the flaming wreckage of the densely packed encampment in the Tal al-Sultan neighborhood. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, most of the victims were women and children.
