Netflix's celebrated period drama "Bridgerton" returns with the first segment of its third season, offering a sumptuous and captivating experience that surpasses previous seasons. Season 3 commences with a fresh cohort of debutantes entering society's marriage arena. Amidst preparations to captivate Queen Charlotte (portrayed by Golda Rosheuvel), the latest scandalous missive from Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews) spreads through society. In this initial part of Season 3, familiar characters take center stage, fostering new alliances and witnessing the emergence of budding romances, injecting a renewed vitality into the narrative. At the heart of these transformations lies the captivating evolution of Penelope Hetherington, portrayed with brilliance by Nicola Coughlan.
Returning to London from a countryside retreat, Penelope finds herself in familiar surroundings yet surrounded by upheaval. Estranged from her once closest friend Eloise after a heated fallout in Season 2 and stung by Colin's hurtful remarks, Penelope feels like a solitary figure. While she has sought solace in her role as Lady Whistledown before, the prospect of enduring her manipulative mother Portia and her shallow, unkind sisters Prudence and Philippa is daunting. Consequently, Penelope resolves that her only recourse is to pursue marriage. However, entering the marriage market for a third season, adorned in flamboyant attire and unflattering ringlet curls, is not going to yield the desired outcome.
Penelope's first mission is a wardrobe makeover. She sheds her youthful citrus-colored dresses, opting instead for breathtaking ensembles in baby blue and seafoam green silks, crafted by "Bridgerton" costume designer John Glaser. Her red locks are elegantly styled into soft waves, with meticulously arranged baby hairs, courtesy of hair and makeup artist Erika Ökvist. However, despite her stunning transformation, the art of engaging potential suitors is a talent Penelope cannot simply buy from a dressmaker.
While Penelope grapples with self-doubt, Colin exudes confidence and effortlessly charms the ladies competing for his affection. After his extensive journey through Europe, Colin reappears in London sporting a rugged transformation. Eager to mend his relationship with Penelope, he offers to coach her in the art of flirtation with gentlemen. Yet, witnessing Penelope's newfound confidence and capturing the interest of the intriguing yet alluring Lord Debling, Colin begins to perceive Penelope through fresh eyes.
The dynamic between the protagonists in "Bridgerton" and "Queen Charlotte" has consistently garnered praise. However, witnessing the shift in Colin and Penelope's relationship from comfortable friendship to aching desire adds a new dimension to their journey. Coughlan and Newton's natural chemistry has always been evident, but Colin's newfound sexual attraction to Penelope, evidenced by his fixation on her lips and a heightened interest in her actions, creates an electrifying tension throughout Part 1 that threatens to leap off the screen. In fact, during a carriage ride after a ball in Episode 4, "Old Friends," the tension nearly reaches its breaking point.
As always, diversity remains central in "Bridgerton." This season, characters like the Mondrichs, Alice and Will, are given more prominence, and members of the Ton with disabilities, such as a deaf debutante and a wheelchair-bound Lord, are showcased. This commitment to inclusivity reaffirms Shondaland and Netflix's dedication to portraying all six Bridgerton siblings' love stories while catering to a modern audience.
While the focus remains on Polin, new showrunner Jess Brownell and her team introduce compelling subplots that delve into the lives of previously peripheral characters. Francesca, the musically inclined sixth Bridgerton sibling, steps into the marriage market with her own distinct views on love and partnership. Similarly, Cressida Cowper, despite her acerbic demeanor, reveals layers beyond her snarkiness, highlighting the pressures faced by all women in the Ton to secure a suitable marriage proposal.
Throughout Season 3, Part 1, Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury exert their influence behind the scenes, but it's Lady Violet Bridgerton who takes on a more proactive role beyond her maternal duties.
While Polin's passionate romance forms the core of the story, the overarching theme of pursuing one's desires resonates throughout these initial episodes. Watching Penelope prioritize herself, even amidst uncertainty, is both inspiring and a reminder that achieving one's desires may come with sacrifices.
